It looks like that there is a performance problem with your server. Please import only data (Pages, Posts,..) without importing media files and after assign your own images.
You can also contact your hosting provider and ask them to check logs in order to find out why this is happening.
I am trying to upload the sample data and I'm getting an error that says "This does not appear to be a WXR file, missing/invalid WXR version number"

I still can't upload the sample data, it is an .xml file. I used the download and the content provided in this thread. Each time it times out.
